The CV Risk app is designed specifically for clinicians, providing three essential 10-year cardiovascular event risk calculators aimed at assisting healthcare professionals and learners in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. This tool caters exclusively to clinicians, rather than the general public. The calculators included in the app are Framingham 2008, ASCVD 2013, and the revised pooled cohort equations ASCVD of 2018.

Within the app, common clinical questions are addressed, such as:

  • What is the ASCVD 10-year cardiovascular risk for a 57-year-old male with hypertension and smoking habits, given specific lipid and blood pressure parameters?
  • What is the potential impact on patient risk when cholesterol levels improve by 11, 27, or 41 points?
  • For a poorly controlled hypertensive smoker with a 10-year risk of 31.3%, what effect would improved blood pressure management or smoking cessation have?
  • How does a cholesterol level of 220 affect an individual's risk at ages 35, 55, and 75?
  • There are claims that ASCVD 2013 overestimates risk, particularly for Black adults. How valid is this? What about the revised pooled cohort equations of 2018?

It is important to note that the app deliberately excludes treatment thresholds, LDL targets, estimates of therapy impact, coronary calcium scoring, and other subjective or controversial elements to ensure a streamlined and straightforward tool for assessing and discussing cardiovascular risk.

This application is tailored for practicing clinicians such as internists and family physicians, resident trainees, medical students, and other healthcare professionals including nurse practitioners and physician assistants. While cardiologists may find this app useful, their focus on secondary prevention places them in a differing scope of practice. As both an educator and clinician, I welcome feedback to enhance the effectiveness of this tool.
